Abstract

This collection is the first to offer a genuinely interdisciplinary approach to Krzysztof Kieslowski's Decalogue, a ten-film cycle of modern tales that touch on the ethical dilemmas of the Ten Commandments. The cycle's deft handling of moral ambiguity and inventive technique established Kieslowski as a major international director. Kieslowski once said, Both the deep believer and the habitual skeptic experience toothaches in exactly the same way. Of Elephants and Toothaches takes seriously the range of thought, from theological to skeptical, condensed in the cycle's quite human tales. Bringing together scholars of film, philosophy, literature, and several religions, the volume ranges from individual responsibility, to religion in modernity, to familial bonds, to human desire and material greed. It explores Kieslowski's cycle as it relentlessly solicits an ethical response that stimulates both inner disquiet and interpersonal dialogue.

Abstract

This book explores adaptation in its various forms in contemporary television drama. It considers the mechanics of adaptation as an ever-more prevalent form of production, most notably in the reworking of literary sources for television. It also explores the broader process through which the television industry as a whole is currently making necessary adaptations in how it tells stories, especially in relation to important concerns of equality, diversity and inclusion. Offering and analysing 16 original interviews with leading British television producers, writers, directors, production designers, casting directors and actors, and with a particular focus on female and/or minority-ethnic industry perspectives, the book examines some of the key professional and creative approaches behind television adaptations today. The book connects these industry insights to the existing conceptual and critical frameworks of television studies and adaptation studies, illuminating the unique characteristics of television adaptation as a material mode of production, and revealing television itself as an inherently adaptive artform. Dr Christopher Hogg is Senior Lecturer in Television Theory at the University of Westminster, UK. Chris specialises in television drama and television acting, with a particular interest in bringing together industry and academic perspectives. He is the co-author (with Dr Tom Cantrell, the University of York) of the book Acting in British Television (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and the co-editor (also with Cantrell) of the collection Exploring Television Acting (2018). .

Abstract

"Rethinking Horror in the New Economies of Television brilliantly skewers horror's changing televisual roles, analysing the genre's recent explosion in popularity. Exploring how a horror cycle has become ubiquitous and valuable across the US TV industry of the twenty-first century, Stella Marie Gaynor smartly complicates our understandings of both television and horror. This razor-sharp study will appeal to a wide range of fans and academics-in short, immediate reader attention is advised." -Professor Matt Hills, author of Fan Cultures and The Pleasures of Horror. This book explores the cycle of horror on US television in the decade following the launch of The Walking Dead, considering the horror genre from an industrial perspective. Examining TV horror through rich industrial and textual analysis, this book reveals the strategies and ambitions of cable and network channels, as well as Netflix and Shudder, with regards to horror serialization. Selected case studies; including American Horror Story, The Haunting of Hill House, Creepshow, Ash vs Evil Dead, and Hannibal; explore horror drama and the utilization of genre, cult and classic horror texts, as well as the exploitation of fan practice, in the changing economic landscape of contemporary US television. In the first detailed exploration of graphic horror special effects as a marker of technical excellence, and how these skills are used for the promotion of TV horror drama, Gaynor makes the case that horror has become a cornerstone of US television. Dr Stella Marie Gaynor is Associate Lecturer at the University of Salford, UK, where she teaches horror media, television, radio, and media studies. Recent publications explore her favorite horror content, covering zombies, vampires, serial killers, true crime, and grim history. She is a founding member of BAFTSS Horror Studies SIG. .

Abstract

An essential book for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics that drive the convergent Chinese television industry. Lin's account moves fluently between the levels of historical, technological, political and personal determinants. The exemplary use of production studies provides a comprehensive view of both the complexity and the internal contradictions of the Chinese TV industry, demonstrating how canny producers work at the edges of what is possible. -Professor John Ellis, Royal Holloway University of London Professor Lin makes a crucial contribution to our understanding with this book, bringing the rich expertise needed to appreciate the distinct dynamics of Chinese television industries and their incorporation of and negotiation with streaming video. This carefully researched book offers deep accounts of production practices informed by substantial field observations and interviews to bring new insight about major questions. - Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Queensland University of Technology, Digital Media Research Centre This book provides a rich description of the shifting production cultures in convergent Chinese television industries across strategic, programming and individual levels. Dr. Lin argues that the current moment of Chinese television is an ideological, cultural and financial paradox in which China's one-party ideology clashes with consumer-oriented capitalism and technological advancements. Drawing upon in-depth ethnography of production cultures across Chinese broadcast and digital streaming sectors, this book illuminates how Chinese producers have placed their aspirations for creative freedoms within edge ball practices. Nuanced and timely, Convergent Chinese Television Industries unveils a complex picture of an industry undergoing dramatic transformations. Lisa Lin is a television producer and university professor specialising in factual and documentary production in the UK, Singapore and China. Her producing credits include I Wouldn't Go in There (National Geographic, 2015), G-Force (Hummingbird Music, 2017), The Truth about Fake News (Channel News Asia, 2018), Frontline Medics Diaries (Channel 4, 2020). Dr. Lin holds a PhD in Media and Communications from Royal Holloway, University of London. .

Abstract

This book explores the challenges facing women from their mid-forties as they attempt to build/maintain careers in the screen industries. Essays are concerned with the intersection of gender and age on screen and behind the camera and how that can create a ‘double jeopardy’. Existing research in this area has been primarily directed to onscreen representation. Female actors, with notable exceptions, struggle to get screen time and expansive roles as they age. Behind the camera, women 45+ also face challenges and roadblocks; to date, less attention has been directed to this group. The cross-cultural research in this collection offers an analysis of representation, on and off screen, touching on film, television, streaming services and film festivals. It includes an exploration of gendered ageism, age bias and stereotyping. It also highlights the achievements of mature female practitioners who, in their work and working lives, embody a resistance to restrictive cultural discourses about ageing women. Dr Susan Liddy lectures in MIC, University of Limerick, Ireland. She is editor of Women in the Irish Film Industry: Stories and Storytellers; Women in the International Film Industry: Policy, Practice and Power and co-editor of Media Work, Mothers and Motherhood. She has co-authored Auditing Gender and Diversity Change in Irish Media sectors for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and The Pursuit of Change for Raising Films Ireland. She is Chair of Women in Film and Television Ireland and sits on a number of national and international industry boards. .

Abstract

In Britain since the 1960s television has been the most influential medium of popular culture. Television is also the site where the Western Front of popular culture clashes with the Western Front of history. This book examines the ways in which those involved in the production of historical documentaries for this most influential media have struggled to communicate the stories of the First World War to British audiences. Documents in the BBC Written Archives Centre at Caversham, Berkshire, the Imperial War Museum, and the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives all inform the analysis. Interviews and correspondence with television producers, scriptwriters and production crew, as well as two First World War veterans who appeared in several recent documentaries provide new insights for the reader. Emma Hanna takes the reader behind the scenes of the making of the most influential documentaries from the landmark epic series The Great War (BBC, 1964) up to more recent controversial productions such as The Trench (BBC, 2002) and Not Forgotten: The Men Who Wouldn't Fight (BBC, 2008). By examining the production, broadcast and reception of a number of British television documentaries this book examines the difficult relationship between the war's history and its popular memory.
